MicroStock Diary - iStockphoto

iStockphoto is the Granddaddy of all the MicroStock sites. It is one of the oldest, is owned by one of the largest traditional Stock sites (Getty Images), and has the best reputation in terms of professionalism and quality.

I started on iStockphoto about 18 months ago and it is consistently one of my top earners. I have had my images downloaded by designers over 7500 times, with one image downloaded over 1500 times. It is extremely hard to get images accepted on the site, but once they are there, they sell well. And you only have to submit 3 images for your initial review, and the critique of those images will be very helpful. It is the site you should get onto first, as the standards on the other sites follow closely to iStockphoto.

My other top sites are (in no order of importance)...
ShutterStock; DreamsTime; Fotolio - all good earners.

I started as an amateur, didn't think I would ever get accepted (I persevered though), and I am quite surprised by how much I earn each month (it bought me my new Canon 30D camera). Sign up through the LINKS to the right (top of the page) and start being surprised with yourself. YOU CAN DO THIS!!!

Stock Photography Diary - My Start

I started in MicroStock photography on ShutterStock & iStockphoto(see LINKS>>>) using a point-&-shoot Panasonic Lumix FZ15 (4.0mp), in August 2006. I quickly learned all about digital noise, artifacting, & many other quality issues. It seemed like everything was getting rejected, & that I’d never make it. I didn’t fully understand exposure (aperture, shutter speed, and ISO) & lighting (what’s White Balance?) & good composition (Rule of Thirds?), though I took good photos – probably by chance.
I tried to learn from my rejections, correct the mistakes I made (NoiseNinja helped!), & resubmit the images. In the process I got better, because I hate post-processing images so I wanted to “get it right in the camera” not in the computer. And all those trademarks & logos everywhere had to be cloned out. But once images were online sales started to come in & I was able to see a payoff to my hard work. I simply wanted to make $150-$200 a month, & it seemed like I could. (I make over 3x the high end now!).
My photos were taken with a basic camera, downloaded as a jpeg, cleaned up in NoiseNinja, trademarks cloned out in Photo Impressions, shadows/brightness/contrast adjusted in MS Photo Editor, & saved in my Workflow folder. I used 4 different stages to process an image – no wonder I got artifacts. But once I got PhotoShop Elements 5 (for $75) – I was able to do all those things & convert RAW images in one program. It was a life-saver.
Anyways, I persevered from a very poor starting position. Learned all I could about basic exposure & technical quality, & resubmitted every single image. Many were accepted. But sales always seemed to pick up with each new batch I submitted. It was starting to payoff. So…..
YOU CAN DO THIS. You can get started at ShutterStock & iStockphoto (and the others) by clicking on their LINKS to the right (towards the top of the page). See my Flickr profile page for a list of Tips & Hints for MAKING MONEY in Stock: by clicking this blog’s title.

MAKE MONEY selling Photos

I am a hobbyist photographer and I sell my stock photos through the websites listed on the upper-right side of this blog page (under LINKS). In under a year I made enough to upgrade my equipment to a Canon 30D camera and a Canon 24-105 f/4L lens.

MicroStock Photography Info.......
1. The sites DO NOT charge a sign-up fee nor any storage fees;
2. The average fee you earn per download is $0.30 to $2.00 per image;
3. I personally average over 1000 downloads a month (for 2007);
4. Stock photography is NOT fine art photography (images are used to sell something);
5. Not all images get approved; you must pass quality and compositional reviews;
6. It's residual income, or passive income.

Click this blogs title to sign up at ShutterStock (my best earner) as my personal referral photographer - and all of the other sites, as well, listed under LINKS.

Best wishes and Happy Shuttering.
